MWRT part 5: West Glacier

After our hike on Highline Trail, we piled back into the Rav4 and headed down the long switchbacks of Going to the Sun Road. We came level with the mountains to the west, then dropped down below them into the valley. We had thought to hike Avalanche Lake on our way, but parking couldn't find a parking space...

After a quick pause to make some gourmet roadside grilled cheese sandwiches (Jarlsberg, paremsan, and pesto on Dave's Killer Bread) and wander along the river, we finally reached the West park entrance.

Our first stop was for ice cream. It is sort of a post-hike tradition for us, and even though we didn't go very far on the Highline Trail that morning, we were ready for something cold and sweet! We discovered delicious local ice cream made by Sweet Peaks. Their chocolate mint was on point - not to minty!

We walked around and visited a few gift shops, and finally wound up at a "visit Alberta" Canadian welcome center. Normally, having just come from Alberta, we wouldn't have stopped... but they had a T-Rex!

Rawr!

Our next few days we spent exploring Kalispell and the Flathead Valley. We camped at Rocky Mountain "Hi" campground next to a bubbling creek. We ate good food, visited the cute town of Whitefish and its nearby ski area, and drove back and forth across the valley. It's beautiful! I could imagine living there...
