Flysch

Gurutze had arranged on Saturday for us to go to Zumaia to see a unique geological phenomenon, flysch. Layers of roc sediment and organic matter were laid down at the bottom of an ancient lake or bay and were them lifted up at a crazy angle to make the amazingly rugged coastline of the Basque Country.

Adventures with Kike, Liere, Jone, and Gurutze

We arrived in Zumaia with plenty of time to catch the boat, so we walked first to the beach.

After a coffee, we boarded a boat and putted past the massive stone breakwater. Rounding the point, we had an amazing view of the massive slabs rising out of the water.

In the afternoon we had a marathon meal at a cider house. There was an asparagus dish, followed by the most delicious grilled shrimp I've ever had, monkfish (hideous alive, buttery goodness dead), seared steak, and an ice cream dessert. Crusty personal bread loaves and traditional cider pervaded the entire meal. It was a culinary experience!
